April 24th 2017 - Unified till the end

The 6th edition of the Special Olympics Golf Masters was secured by the title sponsorship of the Tak Chun Group after losing the support of the Macau Sports Bureau.

With the help of Tak Chun Group, Melco Entertainment & Resorts, MGM Macau, Wynn, Macao Government Tourism Office and an endless list of local sponsors and friends, the tournament was hosted once more by Caesars Golf Macau, who provided all facilities for three consecutive days.

Some 24 Special Olympics Golf delegations from 20 countries and regions plus more than 60 local golfers played together in a UNIFIED Gaming format at three different competition levels. The highlight of the Tournament was surely again Level 5 bringing the world’s best Special Olympics Golfers head to head in an individual stroke play with local corporate and private golfers in a Unified three-player setup.

Level 1 competition – which challenges beginners’ individual skills on the driving range and practice greens, and is supervised by volunteers from the International School of Macau – was won by Park Hee Sang from South Korea.

Level 2 – Best Ball gaming format was secured by Macau’s homebred Special Olympics Golf Team of Tam Chan Kit and Chan Cheong Mui, who are solely funded by the Charity Association of Macau Business Readers. After winning this championship it will be time for both Macau athletes to follow in the footsteps of Sin Kei Cheong and Pak Hoi Chong to Level 5 next year.

At the highest level of Special Olympics Golf, Level 5, we witnessed a new master of golf in action when the world’s best Special Olympics golfer - Thomas Lugg from South Africa - handed the Masters Trophy to Sweden Patric Bohlin.

The new TCG Masters Championship – a competition format that features Level 5 Golfers against their own coaches – unfortunately had been called off after nine holes due to a severe thunderstorm hitting Macau on the last day of the tournament. Thus, no winner has been declared. So, all to play for next year!

According to the Head of Delegations, of all the Special Olympics Programmes in play around the world this event has been granted a new credential - anointed the PGA of Special Olympics Golf! It will be a tough call for the organisers to bring this event to an even higher level . . . but perseverance always was the name of the game.

April 19th 2017 - First Tee-Off: Level 5!

Level 5 teed-off this morning at 8.30am for 18 holes. While the Macau sun is shining at our athletes and guardian players, coaches and family members have gathered at the club house to cheer for the talented golfers with intellectual disabilities.

Meanwhile Level 1 & 2 are enjoying the exciting workshops we prepared this year with amazing local and international artists from Israel, Thailand and India.

March 17th, 2017 - Special Olympics Golfer Back in Town

The world’s biggest golf tournament for people with intellectual disabilities will see golfers from 25 delegations hitting the greens at Caesars Golf Macau from 19th to 22nd April, 2017.

For the sixth edition athletes and coaches from as far away as South Africa and as near as Hong Kong will be joining the event, with Canada this year’s enthusiastic newcomer. Support is not only being extended by long-time host Caesars Golf Macau but this year sees the Tak Chun Group stepping in and becoming the official title sponsor of this meaningful event. Furthermore, the local business fraternity of MGM Macau, Melco Crown Entertainment and Wynn Macau are consolidating their positions as main partners.

With continuous growth the event enjoys tremendous positive response from the Special Olympics community, as well as family members and people connected with them. Bringing together the business world and the local society of Macao to compete with international Special Olympics athletes is key to the ultimate objective of enhancing inclusion through sport.

“This year, a record 25 countries and regions will attend the tournament that is putting the name of Macau firmly on the sports map,” said Paulo A. Azevedo, President of the Charity Association of Macau Business Readers. “We just hope that we will continue to enjoy the support of both private and public institutions so that this major event will continue to demonstrate in no uncertain manner how Macau cares about everyone, not just some of its citizens.”
